Working HoursFull time employment is considered 38 hours weekly (however commonly ranges from 36-40), and 7-8 hours daily.
VacationEmployees are entitled to receive vacation time provided at a minimum of four times of average number of days worked per week. Normally this vacation is extended to 25 days upon agreement. For personal events, legally mandated paid leave of one to four days is usually allowed. For special circumstances, this leave can be extended.
Sick leaveEmployees in the Netherlands can take up to two years of sick leave while continuing to receive 70% of their original salary.
Maternity LeaveExpecting mothers are entitled to 4-6 weeks leave before birth, and 10 after. Two of the weeks allotted to pre-birth leave may also be taken after.
Paternity LeaveNew fathers are entitled to 2 days paid, and 3 days unpaid after the birth of their child.
Parental LeaveOne year of parental leave paid at 70% rate.
Pension FundAn employee over the age of 21 must participate in the industry’s collective pension plan. During the first year of the employment, the employee will participate in the ‘Basic Plan’. The premium is 2.6% of the employee’s monthly salary. This premium is paid by the employer. After the first year, the employee will participate in the ‘Plus Plan’. The premium is 12% of the employee’s monthly salary. The employer pays 8% of this premium and the employee pays 4% of this premium.
Termination/SeveranceThere are four ways to terminate an employment contract: either by mutual consent; by permission from the Dutch Employment Agency; if there has been a case of serious misconduct a summary dismissal is available or by dissolution of the contract by the Catonal Court. As long as termination has not been due to severe misconduct then the employer is required to make a transition payment which is calculated in ratio to the number of years served.
